Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Research Laboratory Assistant to aid a government agency’s Department of HIV Prevention (DHP) by supporting clinical studies, surveillance, and research aimed at reducing new HIV infections. The Laboratory Branch specializes in utilizing liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to test biological specimens for detecting and quantifying antiretroviral and antimicrobial drugs. These quantitative and qualitative assays provide objective assessments of drug use in HIV treatment and prevention efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct analytical testing of biological specimens employing established LC-MS/MS methods.
• Handle processing of biological and potentially hazardous samples, including blood, tissues, cells, and fluids for chemical drug analysis.
• Develop and validate new analytical methods to detect small molecular weight compounds in biological samples.
• Manage collection, processing, aliquoting, and storage of biological specimens; analyze drug distribution in these samples.
• Calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments such as liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry devices along with analytical balances, documenting calibration and maintenance per quality management system requirements.
• Perform serologic and molecular assays and other lab tasks relevant to program studies.
• Maintain meticulous experiment records, analyze data, and prepare findings for presentations and reports.
• Adhere strictly to CDC safety protocols, policies, and quality management system standards.

Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or related discipline relevant to HIV prevention research, plus a minimum of two years of related work experience.
• Proven expertise in analytical chemistry with demonstrated laboratory skills via coursework or prior employment.
• Preferred experience or academic background pertaining to HIV prevention research.
• Strong preference for familiarity with LC-MS/MS methodologies.
• Ability to safely handle potentially hazardous biological specimens while following applicable safety protocols.
• Must qualify for a background check aligned with position sensitivity.
• Compliance with HSPD-12 and ability to obtain Personal Identity Verification (PIV) credentials required.
• Obligation to maintain all vaccinations and medical clearances necessary for CDC laboratory access, including Hepatitis B series, tuberculosis screening, Tdap, MMR, Varicella, and annual influenza shots.
• Work schedule: Full-time, 40-hour week with eight consecutive duty hours, Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, excluding federal holidays and weekends; onsite only, telework is not permitted.
• Exceptional written communication skills with a focus on data visualization and reporting.
• Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, error-free work.
• Experience applying best practices within a public health context.
• Previous experience working within or alongside the CDC.
