Project Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a Project Engineer to join our engineering team at the NASCCO Ship Yard in San Diego, CA. In this role, you will oversee the design development and technical management of complex, mission-critical maritime systems. Collaborating closely with shipyard personnel, clients, program and marketing teams, vendors, and purchasing departments, you will ensure our projects meet stringent quality, cost, and schedule criteria.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering projects by managing scope, schedule, and budgets effectively.
• Interpret customer purchase specifications and ensure adherence to maritime regulations and classification society guidelines such as ABS, USCG, and DNV.
• Develop design concepts and specifications to meet functional, cost, and performance targets for marine applications.
• Coordinate and guide project and design engineers, providing necessary technical leadership.
• Create and oversee layouts, detailed drawings, and assembly plans, performing required engineering analyses.
• Specify shipboard system components, liaising with vendors and suppliers to fulfill project requirements.
• Work closely with shipyard operations to ensure accurate fabrication and installation compliant with design intent.
• Assist in proposal preparation by estimating engineering hours and material needs based on client and marketing data.
• Participate in design and technical reviews, resolving challenges as they arise.
• Review and approve all technical documentation and drawings for accuracy prior to release.
• Maintain consistent communication with cross-functional teams to align on project goals and deliverables.
• Perform related duties supporting departmental and company objectives.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.M.E.) or Electrical Engineering (B.S.E.E.).
• At least 5 years of experience in mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic design related to powered equipment or shipboard systems.
• Proven background in the maritime or shipbuilding sector.
• In-depth understanding of shipboard equipment integration and relevant standards such as ABS, USCG, and DNV.
• Willingness and ability to travel on short notice as required.

Preferred Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency in CAD tools such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
• Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and leadership qualities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaboration across technical and non-technical teams.
• Capability to juggle multiple priorities delivering quality results within tight deadlines.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

• The position requires extended computer and desk work periods.
• Occasional travel to shipyards, supplier locations, or customer facilities may be necessary.

Location and Compensation

This position is based onsite at the NASCCO Ship Yard, San Diego, CA. The annual salary ranges from $130,000 to $160,000, depending on experience. U.S. citizenship is required for this role.
