Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Medical Microbiologist to join our regional team starting September 2027. The incumbent will provide expert consultation and oversight for microbiology laboratories across Kelowna, Kamloops, Trail, and Cranbrook, supporting a broad network of infection control practitioners. The role encompasses supervision of bacteriology, mycology, and molecular diagnostic testing, along with contributing clinical guidance to the regional Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program. The position involves participation in a clinical on-call rotation shared among six microbiologists.
Work Environment
This role is based at Kelowna General Hospital (KGH), a leading tertiary care facility within Interior Health with about 400 beds and over 84,000 emergency visits annually. KGH hosts the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC), featuring specialized surgical suites, including cardiac surgery rooms, a neonatal intensive care unit, extensive inpatient and outpatient facilities, and dedicated psychiatry and pediatric wards. The hospital is a teaching center affiliated with the University of British Columbia’s Southern Medical Program.
Compensation and Benefits
The position offers a clinical service contract with a salary structured on a provincially negotiated grid starting at 90% of $380,812–$423,125 in the initial year, increasing to full compensation by the third year. Relocation funding is available depending on the candidates’ origin within BC, elsewhere in Canada, or international moves, with maximum allowable amounts. Additional benefits and incentives apply and are subject to change, to be confirmed upon offer.
Candidate Profile
The ideal applicant will possess proven expertise in bacteriology, mycology, molecular diagnostics, and infection prevention and control. Excellent interpersonal skills are essential for effective liaison with administrative teams, hospital staff, infection control personnel, and laboratory colleagues across the region.
