Role overview
Torbay Council’s Children’s Services team is looking for caring and motivated people to work as Behaviour 1-1 Enablers. This post is focused on supporting children and young people with physical and/or learning disabilities so they can take part in life at home, in the community, and through activities such as Playschemes and Saturday Clubs.
Main purpose of the job
You will provide individual or small-group support to children and young people with additional needs, helping them build confidence, independence, and a sense of inclusion.
Key duties
- Support children and young people on a one-to-one basis or in small groups.
- Encourage and enable participation in play, social, and community-based activities.
- Offer practical help, including personal care and support during outings.
- Contribute to safe, welcoming, and inclusive environments.
- Work in partnership with families and other professionals to achieve positive outcomes for each child.
What the council is looking for
Previous experience or qualifications in play work or care for children and young people would be helpful, but they are not essential because full training will be provided. The council is seeking someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people with additional needs, communicates well, works positively with others, and can adapt to changing service needs.
Skills, knowledge and experience
- Practical experience supporting children and young people with learning, emotional, behavioural, or physical disabilities.
- Ability to follow guidance from professionals and families.
- Flexible approach focused on helping each child achieve their outcomes.
- Confidence working alongside professionals, parents, and carers.
- Good time management and the ability to organise your own work.
- Understanding of personal care requirements for children and young people with complex emotional and behavioural needs.
- Awareness of health and safety responsibilities.
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures for children and young people.
- Experience supporting children and young people with severe or complex learning, emotional, or physical disabilities, and their families/carers.
- A qualification in, or progress toward, Youth Work, Child Education & Development, and/or Play Work is desirable.
Working arrangements and support
- Hours are flexible to suit both the individual and service needs.
- Regular training and ongoing support are provided.
