Overview
The Visual Information Specialist plays a vital role in establishing the visual and aesthetic benchmarks for new and renovated exhibits at the National Zoo, working closely under the direction of the Director of Exhibits.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the conceptualization, production, and implementation of exhibitions at the National Zoo ensuring design consistency with the institution's architecture, collections, and Smithsonian standards.
- Create innovative interpretive and spatial designs balancing creativity with practicality, cost-management, production and maintenance considerations, and visual appeal.
- Collaborate effectively with exhibition team members to develop design concepts and interpretative solutions.
- Oversee external contract design services and vendor deliverables, guaranteeing adherence to budget, timeline, and quality expectations.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Must pass a Pre-employment Background Investigation and potentially complete a probation period.
- Must maintain a bank account for direct deposit and electronic fund transfer.
- Males born after December 31, 1959, are required to be registered with Selective Service.
- Applicants must meet qualification criteria within 30 days from the announcement closing date, including one year time-in-grade for promotions.
- Basic educational background: Undergraduate or graduate study in commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or related fields; vocational or technical training above high school in these areas qualifies as general experience.
- Specialized experience equivalent to GS-11 level in Federal Service reflecting involvement in the full lifecycle management of exhibition design projects from concept to installation and establishing aesthetic standards for Zoo exhibitions.
- Experience may be paid or unpaid, including volunteer and part-time contributions relevant to the role.
