Job description

About the Company

Monocrane 2010 Limited is a New Zealand-owned company based in Silverdale, Auckland, specializing in crane and hoist solutions. The company designs, manufactures, installs, commissions, and services various types of cranes including overhead, gantry, jib, portal and monorails along with chain hoists and specialized lifting systems across New Zealand and the South Pacific regions. They collaborate closely with clients, suppliers, structural engineers, inspectors, workshops, and installation teams, partnering with international crane and lifting equipment brands to provide comprehensive crane servicing, inspections, repairs, and breakdown support nationwide.

Role Overview

We seek a detail-oriented Structural Design Engineer to join the Silverdale team on a full-time on-site basis. This role involves hands-on engineering duties, including structural steel design related to cranes, CAD drafting, site measurements, and assisting throughout project delivery from concept to installation. The engineer will prepare and verify general arrangement and fabrication drawings, support design calculations, and liaise with clients and cross-functional teams to ensure effective project execution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and verify structural steel components such as runway beams, columns, brackets, corbels, base plates, end stops, tiebacks, and bracing.
  • Analyze crane load data, wheel loads, and support requirements for structural designs.
  • Contribute to structural calculations, prepare design notes, and assist with regulatory documents including PS1/PS4 and Chartered Professional Engineer coordination.
  • Examine client drawings, building data, and site restrictions to inform design work.
  • Transform site measurements into precise sketches and drawing inputs.
  • Prepare and review General Arrangement drawings for cranes and lifting systems ensuring all design aspects like hook coverage, clearances, and structural interfaces are addressed.
  • Collaborate with clients, suppliers, external engineers, workshop personnel, and installation teams to facilitate project alignment.
  • Manage drawing revisions, maintain documentation such as registers and design assumptions, and respond to client feedback.
  • Enhance design processes by updating templates, standard details, checklists, and workflows.
  • Develop or review fabrication drawings for workshop production.
  • Support as-built drawing preparation, operation and maintenance documentation, and project close-out activities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience with structural steel related to industrial and crane support structures including gantries and monorails.
  • Solid understanding of load paths, steel components, connections, base plates, bracing, and foundations.
  • Competency with CAD software, preferably AutoCAD and/or 3D modelling tools.
  • Ability to interpret and prepare architectural, mechanical, structural, and crane drawings accurately.
  • Practical knowledge of fabrication, installation, and on-site constraints.
  • Skill in interpreting specifications, conducting engineering verifications, and producing clear technical documentation.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, meticulous attention to detail, and dedication to safe, compliant designs.
  • Effective communication capabilities and teamwork skills across multidisciplinary stakeholders.
  • Workplace health and safety awareness and readiness to attend site visits as needed.

Desirable Additional Skills

  • Experience with specific crane types such as overhead, gantry, jib cranes and monorails.
  • Background in manufacturing, fabrication, and workshop detailing drawings.
  • Familiarity with 3D modelling platforms like Inventor, SolidWorks, Tekla, Advance Steel, or Navisworks.
  • Knowledge of applicable New Zealand and Australian standards for structural steel, crane supports, and seismic design.
  • Experience collaborating with Chartered Professional Engineers, inspectors, and managing certification requirements.
  • Involvement with PS1/PS4 reports and design/construction documentation.
  • Hands-on experience in site measurement, construction supervision, or fabrication assistance.
  • Progress towards or possession of Chartered Professional Engineer status is advantageous.

Personal Characteristics

  • A practical and proactive approach to tasks.
  • Self-driven with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Clear and effective communication with clients, suppliers, and internal teams.

Work Environment and Benefits

  • Engagement in actual crane and structural steel projects spanning from initial concept to installation and handover.
  • Being part of a dedicated, specialist engineering team located in Silverdale.
  • Opportunities to refine and enhance design systems, templates, and operational workflows.

Application Details

Candidates should submit their CV along with a concise cover letter detailing their experience in structural design, CAD drafting, crane systems, industrial steelwork, and fabrication detailing. Applications are welcomed from structural engineers, mechanical/structural drafters, and engineers with substantial experience in industrial steel structures. Applicants must hold the legal right to work in New Zealand.
