Role Overview
The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) plays an essential role within the health center team, delivering front desk assistance alongside direct patient care with professionalism and empathy. Responsibilities blend administrative tasks—including patient check-ins, appointment scheduling, and communication—with clinical support duties, such as obtaining vital signs, aiding procedures, and maintaining electronic health records. PCAs help create a welcoming, respectful environment for every patient throughout their appointment.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the initial contact by greeting patients, visitors, and escorts warmly and respectfully
- Handle patient check-in and check-out processes, schedule appointments, and manage contraceptive supply sales
- Take and record vital signs; support clinical and laboratory procedures under supervision
- Document patient information accurately and respectfully in electronic health records
- Provide health education and assist with informed consent activities
- Maintain the cleanliness, safety, and adequate stocking of the health center in line with patient care standards
- Work collaboratively with healthcare staff and foster a learning and respectful workplace culture
Qualifications
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED; medical assistant training is advantageous
- Preferably 1 to 3 years of experience, especially in community health environments
- Strong cultural awareness and commitment to promoting racial equity in healthcare
- Comfortable interacting with a diverse patient population, including LGBTQ+ communities
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal abilities
- Physical capability to lift up to 30 pounds and stay active during shifts
