About the Organization
The C.A.R.E. Wellness Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) based in Washington State committed to providing safe farm stays, holistic retreats, and wellness programs specifically for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and their allies. Its mission centers on community well-being through nature-based healing, spiritual growth, and education on racial justice. The center supports vulnerable populations including justice-involved individuals and foster-care alumni, applying trauma-responsive and dignity-centered approaches. A key long-term goal is to acquire farmland to create a spiritual retreat for people of color to recover from chronic trauma and pursue self-actualization. All initiatives form part of a community research project addressing healing from Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS).
Role Overview
The Human Resources Manager will play a critical role in enhancing the organization's people systems, focusing on inclusive recruitment, volunteer engagement, and HR operations suited for a developing nonprofit. This position is volunteer-based with prospects for a paid fellowship or permanent role. Candidates should be motivated by principles of equity, healing justice, and community wellness. Responsibilities include developing and enforcing practical HR procedures encompassing policies, onboarding, record-keeping, and communication approaches that respect privacy, accessibility, and trauma-informed care.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the full cycle of volunteer recruitment, from posting roles and screening applications to conducting reference checks and coordinating scheduling.
- Support the hiring of future paid staff by creating structured interview protocols and managing candidate documentation.
- Develop inclusive job descriptions and outreach efforts to widen diverse candidate pools, specifically within Washington State.
- Maintain structured onboarding processes including checklists, welcoming resources, and orientation scheduling for volunteers and new staff.
- Work collaboratively with team leads to clarify roles, ensure access, and obtain necessary acknowledgments such as confidentiality agreements and policy compliance.
- Keep secure and organized volunteer and personnel records through cloud-based systems, adhering to privacy best practices.
- Monitor participation requirements, training completion, and acknowledgments to maintain organizational standards.
- Contribute to updating HR manuals and standard operating procedures, and raise policy queries to executive leadership when needed.
- Promote organizational culture grounded in trauma sensitivity, accessibility, and equity.
- Promptly escalate sensitive legal or personnel matters to executives and legal counsel as required.
- Prepare HR metrics dashboards reporting on recruitment success, onboarding progress, and volunteer engagement.
- Gather stakeholder feedback to continuously refine volunteer and staff experiences.
- Support compliance processes, reporting obligations, and coordination of HR events or deadlines.
- Act as intermediary between executive leadership, personnel, and stakeholders to ensure clear and effective communication.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in human resources, people operations, or managing volunteers, ideally within nonprofit organizations.
- Familiarity and comfort with inclusive hiring practices, structured interviews, and onboarding design.
- Strong organizational capabilities with a commitment to confidentiality.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Capacity to engage compassionately with a diverse, multi-generational community.
- Basic understanding of HR compliance and willingness to learn local HR regulations specific to Washington State.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 tools including Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Teams, plus experience with cloud-based file management and spreadsheets.
- Typing speed of at least 35 words per minute.
- Experience with digital workflows, file organization, and CRM systems is preferred.
- A strong dedication to equity, trauma-informed care, and community-based approaches.
