Position Overview
The Government of Nunavut is hiring a Housekeeping Assistant for its facility in Iqaluit. Reporting to the Housekeeping Supervisor, this role focuses on keeping all areas of the building clean, sanitary, orderly, and presentable for the public, clients, and staff.
Key Duties
The role supports multiple departments across the facility and is part of the health care team. As a frontline contributor to infection prevention, the position must consistently follow infection-control practices and avoid cross-contamination. Important work areas include operating rooms, two birthing rooms, the nursery, and ward areas. At the end of each shift, the assistant must ensure housekeeping equipment is secured, office doors are shut and locked, and cleaning supplies and equipment are stored safely.
Eligibility and Hiring Notes
This opportunity is limited to Nunavut Inuit who live in Iqaluit. Priority hiring will be given to Nunavut Inuit who self-identify as enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement, in line with the Priority Hiring Policy. A criminal record does not automatically remove a candidate from consideration; any record will be reviewed in relation to the duties of the role. The position is a highly sensitive one and requires a satisfactory criminal record check as well as a clear vulnerable sector check.
Education and Experience
Applicants are generally expected to have at least Grade 8 education or an equivalent level. One year of housekeeping and/or laundry experience in a commercial or institutional setting is considered an advantage. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be accepted.
Languages and Other Assets
The official languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English, and French, and resumes may be submitted in any of these languages. Being fluent in two or more official languages is an asset. Additional strengths include familiarity with Inuit communities, Inuit culture, the land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut, and experience in a northern cross-cultural workplace.
Application and Credential Requirements
Current Government of Nunavut employees who are still serving a probationary period must include written approval from the deputy head of their department for the application to be considered. Candidates with foreign post-secondary education must have their credentials assessed by a recognized Canadian educational institution, or the application may be rejected.
Contact Guidance
When contacting the Government of Nunavut, do not include sensitive or personal details such as social insurance numbers, birthdates, other people’s information, or health information. Instead, provide only a short summary of the issue and the best way to reach you.
Additional Notes
An eligibility list may be created to fill future vacancies. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an interview.
