Role Summary

The Horticulture Tutor role, based in Mt Wellington, Auckland, is a full-time, permanent, on-site position. This role focuses on guiding students through the New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture (Nursery Production) Level 3 program by teaching practical and theoretical horticultural skills. Instruction areas include plant propagation, pruning, plant care, growing systems, and pest, weed, and disease management. Lessons are conducted in greenhouse, nursery, and outdoor settings, supporting learners from varied backgrounds to gain confidence, industry competencies, and pathways towards employment or further education.

Key Duties

• Deliver both theoretical and hands-on horticulture training effectively.
• Instruct on topics such as plant propagation, pruning techniques, plant maintenance, and cultivation systems.
• Facilitate practical experiences in greenhouse and outdoor environments.
• Prepare training plans, maintain accurate student records, and assess learner progress.
• Integrate literacy and numeracy development into teaching practices.
• Guide and mentor students to successfully complete their qualifications.
• Establish and nurture relationships with industry partners and support placement opportunities.
• Maintain compliance with NZQA standards and internal quality policies.

Candidate Requirements

• Hands-on horticultural experience, preferably in nursery production, propagation, or commercial cultivation.
• Possession of at least a Level 4 qualification in Horticulture or a related discipline.
• Comprehensive understanding of plant care, propagation, pruning, and management of pests, weeds, and diseases.
• Committed to engaging and supporting learners from diverse backgrounds.
• Previous experience in teaching, training, or coaching is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Strong communication skills, with effective literacy and numeracy capabilities.
