Work Schedule and Salary
The position follows a continental shift pattern from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, transitioning on July 1, 2026, to a 6 days on, 3 days off shift with hours from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The annual salary for this role is £28,000.
Role Overview
The Farm Operative will aid in the daily operations of an egg-laying poultry farm, performing routine tasks aimed at maintaining the health of hens, optimizing egg output, and upholding strict standards for animal welfare, hygiene, and biosecurity. This role involves working within poultry houses, overseeing flock condition, maintaining farm equipment, collecting eggs, and adhering to farm procedures to meet production goals.
Key Duties
- Support daily care of layer hens to ensure their health and welfare.
- Monitor birds for any illness, injuries, or behavioral changes and promptly report to the Farm Manager.
- Participate in daily processes such as egg collection, grading, and recording production data.
- Maintain appropriate environmental conditions like lighting, ventilation, and temperature in the poultry houses.
- Adhere to strict biosecurity protocols, including proper clothing, footwear changes, and the use of disinfection areas.
- Keep poultry houses and adjacent areas clean and sanitized.
- Handle birds safely in accordance with animal welfare guidelines.
- Monitor feed levels, report shortages, manage feed storage, and ensure proper function of feeding and watering systems.
- Perform routine cleaning of equipment, walkways, nest boxes, and egg belts.
- Assist in washing out and preparing poultry houses between flocks.
- Maintain accurate records of egg production, mortality rates, and other relevant data using manual or digital tools.
- Conduct basic equipment inspections and report any faults or maintenance needs.
- Support general maintenance activities to ensure smooth farm operations.
