The Extension Officer position focuses on enhancing sustainable sorghum cultivation within the Dodoma region by aiding farmers in achieving top yields, superior quality, and meeting supply objectives consistent with the company's sourcing goals.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Facilitate prompt mobilization, enlistment, and registration of sorghum farmers in the designated area.
• Oversee timely completion of land preparation, sowing, weeding, and harvesting aligned with recommended agricultural practices.
• Guide farmers in implementing soil fertility, moisture conservation, and crop rotation techniques.
• Ensure the use of certified sorghum seeds planted at appropriate seed rates.
• Determine and confirm the farmland area and input needs within the operational zone.
• Supervise accurate and on-schedule application of herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides adhering to recommended dosages.
• Continuously monitor crop development, offering technical advice as needed.
• Detect and address abnormalities such as pest infestations or diseases by advising corrective measures.
• Encourage mechanization adoption, including equipment like planters and threshers.
• Promote and share updated farming technologies and best practices with farmers.
• Support the recovery process of input costs advanced to farmers.
• Coach farmers to manage their farming operations as profitable enterprises.
• Maintain precise records of seed distribution, uptake, planted acreage, and crop yields.
• Prepare and deliver monthly reports, incorporating sustainability activities.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Agronomy or related discipline.
• At least two years of experience in agronomy or agricultural extension roles.
• Experience engaging with smallholder and commercial farming communities.
• Familiarity with sorghum production methods is advantageous.
• Possession of a valid driver's license.
• Proficiency in English; knowledge of Swahili is beneficial.
