Overview
The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, part of the Smithsonian Institution, is a leading institution for contemporary art, dedicated to fostering public understanding and appreciation through exhibitions, education, and research. The Education Program Specialist for School and Teacher Programs is responsible for developing and managing educational initiatives targeted at middle school students and teachers, aligning with the Museum’s educational philosophy. This role involves community partnership development and coordination with teaching artists to enhance program delivery.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with education leads and museum staff to design, assess, and enhance school and teacher programs, with a focus on grades 6-8, ensuring alignment with the museum’s mission and educational philosophy.
- Participate in planning and implementing programs alongside the School and Teacher Programs team members.
- Gather and maintain data and materials supporting program reporting for leadership and stakeholders.
- Provide logistical and coordination support for programs occurring outside regular hours, such as evenings and weekends.
- Track and manage the budget for School and Teacher Programs, assisting the education lead with paperwork related to program expenses.
- Draft and review procurement documents related to program needs.
- Organize educational materials for the museum's creative studio and virtual platforms.
- Promote awareness of the School and Teacher Programs through outreach and partnerships.
- Engage with potential community collaborators to recruit program participants.
- Serve as a liaison representing the program in Smithsonian-wide meetings and related collaborative projects.
Qualifications
- Possess a degree with at least 24 semester hours in a relevant field including at least 9 semester hours in education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Alternatively, four years of relevant work experience demonstrating thorough knowledge of the field or at least one year of professional teaching experience where the applicant had full instructional responsibility.
- 2 years of advanced graduate education leading to a master’s or equivalent degree related to this role and/or one year of specialized experience.
- Solid understanding of museum education theories and practical application in informal education settings.
- Experience developing educational curricula and programs for school and teacher audiences including digital learning initiatives.
- Knowledge of contemporary art suitable for developing instructional content and engaging diverse audiences.
- Administrative expertise in budgeting, procurement, and community outreach partnership development.
Additional Information
- This is a temporary trust fund position for one year based in Washington, DC, with full-time onsite work.

Salary and Application
