About the Role
Empire Life is searching for a skilled Data Scientist to join its Data and Analytics team. This is a fully remote position for candidates located anywhere in Canada. The role plays a crucial part in designing, developing, and deploying advanced analytics, machine learning, and Generative AI solutions aimed at delivering tangible business benefits through predictive analytics, intelligent automation, and AI-powered decision-making systems. The work environment is centered around a modern enterprise AI ecosystem utilizing Microsoft Azure, Snowflake, and other enterprise AI platforms to deliver scalable and governed AI solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement both traditional machine learning and generative AI projects, leveraging enterprise tools such as Microsoft Azure AI services, Snowflake, OpenAI technologies, and other approved AI platforms.
- Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, technology teams, and product owners to identify opportunities for analytics, AI, and intelligent automation improvements.
- Assess machine learning and Generative AI systems using quantitative metrics, experimentation strategies, human evaluation, and measurements of business impact.
- Translate complex business challenges into analytical and AI-based solutions that enhance operational efficiency, customer experience, risk management, and business development.
- Create, test, and refine machine learning and statistical models utilizing techniques including classification, regression, clustering, forecasting, optimization, experimentation, and deep learning.
- Build and assess generative AI applications such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), semantic search, intelligent assistants, prompt engineering, and AI workflow orchestrations.
- Conduct exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, experimental design, model evaluation, and visualization to facilitate data-informed decisions.
- Champion responsible AI practices, including ensuring model explainability, governance, monitoring, and compliance.
- Work alongside ML engineering teams to deploy models and AI capabilities into scalable enterprise solutions.
Candidate Profile and Qualifications
- A Master's degree or higher in a quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or Engineering.
- Minimum of two years of professional experience in a quantitative or data science role, preferably within insurance or financial services industries.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL programming, with strong knowledge of both traditional machine learning and Generative AI theories and algorithms, including experience with Azure OpenAI and Google Generative AI platforms.
- Solid background in applied statistics and quantitative modeling such as regression, segmentation, and experimentation.
- Familiarity with advanced AI and machine learning methods including deep learning, large language models (LLMs), RAG, and agentic AI systems is advantageous.
- Ability to convert ambiguous business challenges into quantifiable analytical and AI-driven solutions.
- Knowledge about LLM evaluation approaches, prompt engineering, semantic retrieval systems, and AI-assisted workflow design is desirable.
- Strong communication skills to effectively convey analytical results, AI capabilities, and limitations to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale AI or intelligent automation projects.
- Understanding of AI governance, model risk management, and responsible AI frameworks.
- Exposure to conversational AI, intelligent document processing, knowledge assistant technologies, semantic search, and AI copilots for enterprises.
- Experience working in agile product delivery contexts.
- English language proficiency is mandatory for communication across Canada.
Compensation and Benefits
- Target Total Compensation (base salary and bonus) ranges from $121,304 to $171,304 annually, with the actual offer depending on skills and experience.
- Employment is permanent and full-time with a hybrid work model available.
- Competitive salary with yearly pay increments.
- Annual bonus recognizing company results and individual performance (for non-sales roles).
- Access to professional development programs and tuition reimbursement dependent on role.
- Comprehensive employer-funded benefits including life, health, and dental insurance starting day one, along with a generous health spending account.
- Flexible working arrangements and personal health days.
- Four weeks of vacation annually from hire date.
- Defined contribution pension plan with employer matching.
