About the role
Sumtag is hiring a Chief Technology Officer in Berlin for a hybrid setup. This is a founding-level opportunity for someone who wants to help build the company from the ground up while shaping the product, technology, and culture from an early stage. The business is still in its seedling phase and the team is looking for a technical co-founder rather than a traditional employee.
The platform aims to become an everyday services ecosystem for people in Germany, starting in Berlin and later expanding nationwide. It combines AI, local service providers, wellness, home assistance, transport, on-demand services, delivery, and bureaucracy-related support into one trusted system.
Germany has a strong economy, but day-to-day life can still be difficult for many people. Finding reliable help for grocery delivery, elderly support, beauty and wellness services at home, or freelance assistance often means juggling multiple platforms, waiting for replies, facing high costs, or dealing with scams. At the same time, many skilled freelancers and local providers struggle to get steady customers. Sumtag is building a trusted solution for both sides.
What the CTO will own
- Take the lead on the company’s overall technology direction, long-term strategy, and execution.
- Own software engineering, platform design, and product technology decisions so the marketplace remains scalable, secure, and fast.
- Guide development work, set priorities for technical initiatives, and keep the technology roadmap aligned with business goals.
- Work closely with product, operations, and leadership teams to turn ideas into shipped product outcomes.
- Manage technology budgets, external vendors, and technical risk.
- Set standards for development quality, data protection, and infrastructure reliability.
- Mentor technical leaders and help build a culture of innovation, ownership, and accountability.
- Continuously evaluate new technologies that could improve Sumtag’s services.
- Build and launch the MVP.
- Design backend systems that can scale as the platform grows.
- Create AI-based matching for services and users.
- Develop provider and customer-facing applications.
- Integrate payment functionality.
- Build booking and scheduling workflows.
- Design secure infrastructure.
- Lead engineering recruitment.
- Define and evolve the technical strategy.
What we’re looking for
- Deep experience in software and product development, especially with digital platforms or marketplace products that have grown over time.
- Strong knowledge of IT strategy and system architecture, including secure and scalable design.
- Solid project management ability, with experience leading cross-functional teams and delivering complex initiatives on time and within budget.
- Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, APIs, integrations, and modern engineering practices such as Agile, DevOps, and CI/CD is a strong plus.
- Senior-level technology leadership experience, ideally in a startup or fast-growing company.
- Strong analytical thinking, decision-making, and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts in business terms.
- Comfortable working on-site in Berlin and collaborating with both local and distributed teams.
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Students, recent graduates, and candidates with smaller diplomas are also encouraged to reach out if they have strong talent, drive, and ambition.
Compensation and founding setup
This is a co-founder opportunity with meaningful equity ownership. The exact equity share will depend on experience, commitment, and timing. Contributions are intended to be treated as founding-level ownership rather than a standard employee relationship.
