Role overview
This position sits within the Global Merchant & Network Services (GMNS) organization at American Express. The GMNS Product team supports the enterprise across business units and customer segments, operating within a network that processes more than $1.6 trillion in annual spend and serves issuers and acquirers in over 170 markets.
The team is leading a multi-year enterprise payments initiative focused on creating a central excellence hub for payment execution. The aim is to improve operational efficiency, accelerate the development of new payment products and capabilities, better support business-unit strategies, and meet changing customer payment needs.
This is an individual contributor role focused on designing and delivering modern, scalable enterprise payment capabilities. You will work closely with Product Management, Architecture, Engineering, and Market teams to turn strategy into practical, scalable product and platform solutions.
The role also contributes to the redesign of existing payment flows and the expansion of bank-based money movement capabilities across global markets. The position reports to the Manager in the Payments India Centre of Excellence (CoE).
Responsibilities
- Work with product teams to convert strategy and roadmap priorities into technical capabilities and concrete execution plans.
- Build release plans in coordination with stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Operations, Strategy, and Market teams.
- Take part in discovery and solution design for new payment flows and bank integration capabilities that support major customer journeys.
- Shape and refine capabilities, features, user stories, and the acceptance or success criteria tied to them.
- Set market-specific platform needs for global platform inclusion and expansion release planning.
- Create delivery approaches for modernization, including playbooks that support broader adoption and scaling of modern payment capabilities worldwide.
- Support the shift from legacy payment solutions to resilient, scalable, cloud-enabled platforms wherever applicable.
- Define and track delivery and performance measures to improve predictability, speed, quality, and incremental value delivery.
- Serve as the communication link between technical teams and business stakeholders so goals, progress, and expectations remain aligned.
- Help build a team culture that values collaboration, delivery excellence, and disciplined execution.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience in product development, product management, strategy, engineering, or a related function.
- Hands-on experience working with engineering teams through the full product lifecycle, including the ability to translate business needs into technical language and back again.
- Strong personal organization, initiative, and accountability for delivering results.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with comfort handling ambiguity, making trade-offs, and executing at scale.
- Ability to identify issues quickly and choose the right resolution path using practical, creative problem solving.
- Genuine interest in payments and financial technology, ideally with exposure to bill pay, servicing, bank connections, or multi-rail initiatives.
- Strong curiosity, critical thinking, and interest in solving complex business and technical problems.
- Ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders toward shared goals.
- Experience driving change and using scaled Agile practices to support product delivery.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Business, or a related discipline.
