Assistant Conservator

Role Overview

The Assistant Conservator will play a key role in supporting the preservation and care of the National Museum of Natural History's extensive biological, geological, and anthropological collections. This position involves diverse conservation activities aimed at maintaining specimens in their best condition.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the delivery and coordination of conservation services throughout the museum, collaborating closely with the Museum Conservator to plan conservation projects.
• Prepare detailed written surveys and reports related to collections, facilities, and exhibits, including treatment proposals supplemented with sketches, analytical data, photographs, and radiographic images.
• Conduct skilled hands-on conservation procedures involving examination, documentation, and restoration of collection specimens and objects.
• Offer exhibition-related conservation assistance and advice to the Office of Exhibits and relevant department personnel.
• Contribute proactively to preventive conservation programs by generating and sharing relevant information with stakeholders.

Required Qualifications and Conditions

• Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
• Potential completion of a probationary period following appointment.
• Possession of a bank account for direct deposit of salary.
• Compliance with Selective Service registration if applicable (males born after 12/31/1959).

Alternatively, three years of progressive graduate education toward a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree relevant to the position may substitute for the required experience. A combination of education and experience may also fulfill the entry criteria.
