Overview
The Northern Territory Department of Corrections (DoC) is inviting applications for full-time Trainee Correctional Officers to work across Darwin, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, and Katherine. This role involves participating in a comprehensive training and career development program with opportunities for long-term employment in a vital community and criminal justice role.
Compensation and Benefits
- Remuneration package ranges from $69,316 to $108,308 inclusive of superannuation and allowances
- Base salary during training ranges from $62,167 to $69,074, rising to $108,308 after completion of training
- Paid 11-week training program (8 weeks classroom-based and 3 weeks on-the-job training)
- Nationally recognised Certificate III in Correctional Practice, fully funded by DoC
- Up to 7 weeks of recreational leave annually with additional leave for Sunday shifts
- Work-life balance supported with 13 shifts over 28 days post-training
- Wellness allowance, uniforms, opportunity for paid overtime
- Specific attraction and retention allowances for Alice Springs employees, paid incrementally
Training and Role Details
The training program spans approximately 12 months, during which candidates must complete nationally accredited coursework and pass evaluations. Key responsibilities include supervising prisoners, maintaining safety and security, managing emergencies, and assisting in prisoner reintegration efforts.
Salary Breakdown During Training
- First 8 weeks: $62,167 salary plus 12% superannuation ($69,627 total package)
- Weeks 9-11 (shadow period): $62,167 salary plus 40% consolidated allowance ($24,867) and 12% superannuation, totaling $97,478 package
- Post 11 weeks training: base salary of $69,074 plus 40% consolidated allowance ($26,825) and 12% superannuation totaling $108,308 package
Requirements and Eligibility
- Australian/New Zealand citizenship or Australian permanent residency required for permanent employment
- Eligible visa holders with full work rights may be considered for fixed-term contracts
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Valid Northern Territory "C" class driver’s license and ability to operate a manual vehicle
- Strong communication and organisational abilities
- Good physical fitness
- Ability to work effectively within cross-cultural settings
- Good character and integrity
