Specialist - Poison Control

Overview

The position of Specialist at the Poison Control Center involves operating with minimal supervision to deliver assessments, clinical advice, and continuous follow-up care in response to emergency and informative calls involving poisoning incidents. These calls come from both the general public and healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide clear verbal and written clinical advice and case management recommendations during emergency and informational calls to the clinical toxicology service.
• Collect relevant information from callers to independently evaluate the severity of poisoning cases and understand the caller's mental state.
• Decide autonomously if the poisoning case can be managed within the poison control center or requires medical evaluation by healthcare providers.
• Respond to callers with precise, thorough, and understandable guidance tailored to their comprehension level.
• Conduct follow-up calls to monitor patient conditions and adjust management plans as needed.
• Maintain detailed documentation of all consultations and calls within the center's computerized medical record system.
• Offer telephone and bedside management suggestions for consultative cases, perform rounds, and provide follow-up under the supervision of a medical toxicologist.
• Mentor PharmD students, pharmacy residents, emergency medicine residents, and other trainees during toxicology rotations, including preparing and delivering educational lectures on poisoning topics.
• Engage in educational programs conducted by the poison control center and clinical toxicology section.
• Research case histories and medical literature, consult experts, and develop medically and economically sound treatment protocols and triage guidance.
• Compile and distribute reference materials on the toxicity and availability of new pharmaceuticals.
• Coordinate with on-call personnel regarding medical and toxicology-related matters.
• Prepare materials and participate in meetings, training sessions, and conferences.
• Assist in orienting and supervising new team members and students when necessary.
• Contribute to ongoing clinical research projects and public education outreach initiatives.

Educational and Experience Requirements

• Must hold a PharmD degree as a clinical pharmacist.
• Possess 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in an accredited poison control center or a critical care/acute inpatient clinical setting.
• Demonstrated accomplishments in clinical care, research, education, or administration within the relevant fields.
