About Kong and the IAM Team
Kong Inc., a renowned innovator in cloud API technology, empowers organizations globally to adopt an API-first mindset and accelerate AI integration securely. The Identity and Access Management (IAM) team at Kong is responsible for the critical backend systems that manage authentication and authorization for Kong Konnect and its Developer Portal, securing millions of API requests daily with fine-grained access control and seamless identity management.
Role Overview
As a Software Engineer in the IAM team, you will design and develop scalable backend microservices using Golang to handle identity management, permissions, and access control for a multi-tenant platform. Your work will focus on building secure, high-performance APIs, deploying on AWS with Kubernetes, and contributing to industry-leading IAM solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain backend services in Golang supporting authentication and authorization.
- Develop scalable APIs integrating IAM within Kong's ecosystem.
- Manage deployments on AWS leveraging Kubernetes for container orchestration.
- Ensure backend systems are secure, efficient, and capable of handling large traffic volumes.
- Collaborate with engineering and security teams to adopt best IAM practices.
- Partner with product teams to deliver features enhancing user experiences.
- Write clean, test-driven code with comprehensive testing coverage.
- Engage in code reviews, architecture discussions, and service performance monitoring.
- Participate in on-call rotations to maintain service availability.
- Promote a culture emphasizing engineering excellence and security-first development.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of software engineering experience focused on backend and distributed systems.
- Proficiency in Golang for production microservice development.
- Strong skills in API design including REST and gRPC.
- Experience with microservices architecture deployment in live environments.
- Practical AWS knowledge including EKS, ECS, Lambda, DynamoDB, RDS, and S3.
- Kubernetes expertise in deploying and managing containerized applications.
- Understanding of distributed systems concepts ensuring fault-tolerance and high availability.
- Knowledge of security best practices for backend services and credential management.
- Experience designing multi-tenant services serving diverse customers.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
- Proficient with both SQL and NoSQL databases and data modeling.
- Solid fundamentals in computer science including data structures, algorithms, and system design.
- Experience collaborating with globally distributed teams and using tools like GitHub, JIRA, and Confluence.
- Strong analytical and debugging abilities for complex distributed environments.
- Interest and eagerness to expand knowledge in IAM technologies.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with authentication and authorization protocols such as OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, and SAML.
- Knowledge of RBAC and permissions management systems.
- Familiarity with API Gateways and Developer Portal development.
- Understanding of identity federation and single sign-on implementations.
- Experience with identity providers like Auth0, Okta, or Keycloak.
- Knowledge of token lifecycle, session management, and distributed caching (Redis, Memcached).
- Familiarity with messaging and event streaming platforms like Kafka, RabbitMQ, or NATS.
- Awareness of zero-trust security models and policy-based access control.
- Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, and CloudWatch.
- Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform or Pulumi and service mesh tech (Istio, Linkerd).
- Understanding of compliance standards like SOC 2, ISO 27001, and GDPR.
- Contributions to open-source projects and engagement with engineering communities.
- Additional programming proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, or Rust.
- Background or strong interest in security engineering.
Compensation
The salary range for this position is between CA$105,000 and CA$195,000 annually.
