Job description

Position Overview

The Shift Engineer will lead the operations shift team to maintain safe and efficient plant functionality. Tasked with timely and accurate decision-making on plant processes and performance, the role requires consultation with the Operations Manager as needed. The position demands a thorough understanding and hands-on experience with technologies used in modern process plants related to power generation and desalinated water production.

The ideal candidate will possess strong communication and leadership capabilities, and the ability to work proactively with significant motivation and energy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee Safety Management and Environmental Management Systems where applicable.
  • Maintain compliance with Integrated Management System (IMS) standards and certifications.
  • Implement and enforce all operational policies and procedures.
  • Prepare safety documentation consistent with JOMEL safety standards and demonstrate proficiency with the Permit to Work (PTW) system.
  • Lead shift teams to meet plant performance targets ensuring optimal production of power and water as required.
  • Coordinate activities between operations and maintenance departments ensuring effective collaboration.
  • Ensure the shift is adequately staffed and resources are available for safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the cogeneration plant.
  • Align operations and maintenance activities with routine, preventive, and predictive maintenance needs.
  • Monitor equipment operational parameters continuously to detect abnormalities early and initiate preventive actions to avoid unscheduled outages.
  • Manage and oversee chemical processing, sampling, and water plant controls to maintain quality standards and compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Uphold high management, ethics, and leadership standards.
  • Develop and implement training programs to enhance individual competencies and operational skills.
  • Lead performance management by setting objectives, conducting reviews, and supporting employees to achieve goals.
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning by integrating lessons learned processes.
  • Plan for succession in key staff roles.
  • Promote effective communication within the shift team to keep members informed and engaged.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in specialized plant areas and deliver necessary training.
  • Ensure all activities follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and update team members on any changes.
  • Raise work orders to report plant defects and monitor progress on repairs and maintenance.
  • Coordinate maintenance schedules with Senior Shift Engineer and maintenance departments.
  • Prepare and distribute safety documents to facilitate safe plant isolations during maintenance.
  • Maintain strong coordination with Power, Gas, Sea Water, and Water Control Centers on availability declarations and planning.
  • Operate independently within set guidelines, escalating extraordinary issues beyond set policies to the Senior Shift Engineer for action.
  • Ensure shift operations comply with Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) audits, ISO standards, plant operation targets, and reporting quality.
