Role Overview

As a Senior Software Engineer on Coalition's Underwriting team, you will architect and implement scalable backend systems that are central to evaluating and automating cyber insurance underwriting. Your work will involve integrating diverse security, insurance, and proprietary datasets, applying business logic, statistical analysis, and machine learning to support risk evaluation. In this highly cross-functional position, you’ll work closely with underwriters, data scientists, and other engineering teams to develop and enhance the core underwriting workflows and automation.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain high-scale backend services using Python and/or Go, powering underwriting automation and decision processes.
• Enhance systems that integrate and utilize statistical and machine learning models to manage and monitor cyber risk over time.
• Implement effective monitoring, alerting, and dashboarding to ensure robust operational visibility and efficient incident handling.
• Write structured, maintainable, and well-tested code, including comprehensive unit and integration tests, to support frequent and reliable deployments.
• Lead smaller projects independently and drive larger technical initiatives as part of a team, working collaboratively with product, underwriting, and data specialists.
• Contribute to platform architecture and design, balancing scalability and modularity as system demands grow.
• Streamline and enhance underwriting and decision-making workflows for internal stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience building and managing backend APIs and services in Python and/or Go, using established frameworks and patterns.
• Hands-on with RESTful APIs and familiarity with at least one other communication protocol such as gRPC or GraphQL.
• Proficient with source control systems (e.g., Git).
• Demonstrated experience deploying services on AWS or a comparable cloud platform.
• Acquainted with modern monitoring and error-tracing technologies like Sentry, Datadog, Jaeger/Zipkin, Graylog, or AppDynamics.
• Proven experience working in agile environments and using collaboration tools such as the Atlassian suite, GitHub, or GitLab.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or closely related field, or demonstrated equivalent practical expertise.
• Strong ownership mindset: ability to autonomously manage projects of moderate complexity, make sound technical decisions, and mentor peers.

Compensation Details

• For Alberta, British Columbia & Ontario: Base salary ranges from 149600 to 199600 CAD per year.
• For other regions in Canada: Base salary ranges from 134600 to 184600 CAD per year.
• Exact compensation depends on experience, education, qualifications, and geographic location.
