Role Overview

The Safety Specialist, reporting to the Plant Safety Manager, is responsible for on-the-ground supervision during shifts to ensure all workplace safety standards are adhered to within the manufacturing facilities. This role emphasizes proactive hazard identification, enforcement of safety measures including PPE compliance, accident investigation, and ensuring operations align with applicable federal and state safety regulations to safeguard employee welfare.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct continuous monitoring of factory floors, materials storage areas, and loading bays ensuring adherence to fleet safety standards.
  • Inspect safety physical barriers on high-risk equipment such as hydraulic presses, balers, and conveyor systems.
  • Ensure 100% compliance in usage of safety gear including steel-toe boots, helmets, and safety goggles.
  • Audit compliance and effectiveness of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) points.
  • Intervene immediately to stop any processes violating safety protocols.
  • Maintain detailed incident and inspection logs as per Nigeria Factories Act requirements.
  • Ensure strict compliance with factory-specific Permit-to-Work (PTW) systems.
  • Lead daily safety briefings at shift start with production teams.
  • Act as chief floor warden during emergencies such as fires or chemical leaks.
  • Perform weekly testing of eye-wash stations, fire exits, and first aid equipment.
  • Conduct root cause analyses for minor accidents or mechanical failures.
  • Manage prompt resolution of identified physical hazards on the plant floor.
  • Ensure daily safety briefings are completed for all production lines.
  • Work to reduce Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) on a monthly basis.
  • Communicate effectively in English and local languages to engage workforce.

Candidate Profile

  • Possess a B.Sc. or HND in Engineering, Science, or a related discipline.
  • Registration with the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON) and holding HSE Level 3 certification, or equivalent health and safety credentials, is advantageous.
  • 1 to 3 years of hands-on experience in safety supervision within manufacturing settings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge working around moving machinery, automated conveyors, high-voltage systems, or forklift operations.
  • Experience performing routine safety inspections using either manual or digital tools.
  • Familiarity with issuing or reviewing permits related to hot work, confined spaces, and working at heights.
  • Proven ability to identify risks and report unsafe practices or equipment directly to safety management.
  • Skilled in conducting safety investigations and root cause analyses, proposing effective corrective actions.
  • Strong capability to enforce safety standards and influence team behavior positively.
  • Competency in regulatory compliance management and understanding of hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • Proficient in both written and spoken English, coupled with solid IT literacy.
