About the Role

Join the Rural Youth and Adult Literacy Trust (RYALT) as a Volunteer Literacy Coach and make a meaningful impact in your community by helping individuals improve their reading and writing abilities. You will work closely with one student through video conferencing, assisting them in foundational literacy skills suitable for everyday life, employment, and further education.

Who the Students Are

Individuals ranging from those just learning the alphabet to those preparing to write essays.
Many face challenges with literacy necessary for daily living, work, and study.
Ages span from 13 to 65 years, coming from diverse backgrounds.

Your Role and Responsibilities

Provide personalized one-on-one coaching sessions remotely.
Devote about 2 hours weekly for sessions, typically one main session plus several brief catch-ups.
Allocate additional time for light preparation before sessions.
Engage in ongoing online training and professional development webinars.

Requirements and Commitments

Excellent spoken and written English communication skills.
Familiarity with technology such as Slack and video conferencing platforms.
Reliable and consistent availability for a minimum of one year.
Completion of a police background check is mandatory.
Training involves approximately 15 hours online, completed at your own pace.
Participation in professional development webinars conducted once every school term.
Time commitment totals approximately 3 hours weekly (2 hours coaching and 1 hour preparation).
