Overview
National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) is seeking a full-time Railroad Flagger based in Shreveport, LA. The role is responsible for ensuring the safety of personnel on train tracks by managing train movements according to federal safety standards. This position supports a diverse range of railroad projects including major railroads, smaller rail lines, transit systems, and state transportation initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities
- Oversee and coordinate safety operations at job sites.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, train crews, railroad employees, and contractors.
- Conduct pre-work safety briefings.
- Strictly adhere to and enforce railroad, state, and federal safety regulations.
- Verify contractors’ compliance with training requirements.
- Identify and address any violations of safety rules promptly.
- Prepare and submit daily reports detailing work activities and safety measures.
- Ensure continual on-track safety in line with federal guidelines.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Minimum of two years’ relevant experience with Class 1 Railroads, Regional Short Lines, Transit Systems, State DOT Rail Divisions, or railroad contractors and consultants, preferably within Maintenance of Way (MOW) departments.
- Proficient with basic computer applications including Citrix, email, phone, and text messaging platforms.
- Comfortable operating Android tablets and smartphones.
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
- Knowledgeable in railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety practices.
- Capable of fostering and sustaining effective client relationships.
- Willingness to undertake significant travel commitments, often ranging between 50% and 85%.
- Ability to complete all mandatory federal, client, and company training programs.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Field-based job requiring presence on railroad sites.
- Must have proficient English communication skills (speaking, reading, writing).
- Travel or extended driving over long distances is expected.
- Physical stamina to stand for extended durations and navigate uneven terrain.
- Good vision including near, distance, color, and peripheral sight is essential.
- Ability to work under varying weather conditions including extreme heat and cold.
- Acceptance of working in dusty and noisy environments.
- Capability to lift loads up to 50 pounds safely.
