Overview
The Project Portfolio Manager is responsible for overseeing the overall health and effectiveness of the professional services project portfolio. This role ensures adherence to project management standards and governance while enabling optimal resource allocation and financial performance across multiple projects.
Portfolio Management & Governance
- Oversee project portfolio status, risks, resource limitations, financial outcomes, and delivery efficiency.
- Ensure consistent application of project management methodologies and governance frameworks.
- Develop portfolio reporting tools and executive dashboards for performance tracking.
- Lead assessments of project risks and facilitate remediation efforts.
- Standardize project lifecycle processes across all service lines for uniformity and efficiency.
Resource Planning & Capacity Management
- Collaborate closely with Resource Management and Delivery Leadership to optimize the utilization of technical resources.
- Coordinate scheduling of resources across all active projects proactively.
- Balance project demand with available personnel capacity.
- Engage in weekly meetings to plan resource allocation.
- Identify staffing shortages and escalate requirements for hiring or contracting personnel.
- Enhance forecasting accuracy regarding upcoming project demands to ensure preparedness.
Financial Oversight
- Track project profitability metrics including margins, burn rates, revenue recognition, and forecasts.
- Evaluate projects against gross margin objectives and propose necessary corrective measures.
- Identify projects needing scope adjustments, change orders, repricing, escalation, or executive involvement.
- Partner with Finance to improve financial forecasting and revenue transparency.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Preferred: PMP certification.
- Minimum 10 years of project and program management experience.
- At least 5 years experience managing project portfolios or PMO roles.
- Expertise managing projects in Professional Services, Consulting, MSP, Cloud, Infrastructure, Security, or Technology domains.
- Proven financial management and forecasting skills.
- Experience overseeing resource planning and utilization.
- Ability to design dashboards, KPIs, and deliver executive reporting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading PMO teams.
- Familiarity with Autotask, PSA platforms, Power BI, Microsoft Project, or related tools.
- Advanced certifications such as PgMP, PMI-ACP, or other portfolio management credentials.
- Background in managed services or cybersecurity organizations.
- Adaptability within a dynamic, fast-growing technology services environment.
