Project Curator - Amazons Exhibition

About the Role

The British Museum is recruiting a Project Curator to join the Greece and Rome department, working part-time (four days weekly) for a 15-month fixed term. Located in Bloomsbury, London, this role focuses on supporting, developing, and delivering the Amazons exhibition that explores the longstanding intrigue with legendary warrior women from Greek mythology through to modern popular culture.

In close collaboration with the Lead Curator and Senior Project Manager, the Project Curator will oversee various aspects of exhibition development including public engagement programs and contributing to the final stages of publication production. The role involves research, project coordination, and engaging stakeholders both internally and externally to help successfully realize the exhibition.

Candidate Profile

• Degree in Classics, Classical Archaeology, History of Art, or related field.
• Strong interest and knowledge in Greek mythology or classical reception.
• Experience in museums, exhibitions, or research, preferably with exposure to developing exhibitions or public programs that appeal to general audiences.
• Excellent organizational ability with strong attention to detail.
• Capability to manage multiple tasks effectively and meet deadlines.
• Proficient communication skills, both written and verbal, including some public speaking experience.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Office and managing digital images.
• Ability to foster positive working relationships across diverse teams and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Lead Curator and Senior Project Manager as a main project team member.
• Conduct scholarly research on objects and images relevant to the exhibition and accompanying book.
• Maintain and manage exhibition documents, correspondence, and records.
• Coordinate loan processes, due diligence, and copyright permissions.
• Update and oversee object databases and digital image archives.
• Assist in securing reproduction rights and drafting/editing exhibition texts.
• Communicate and collaborate with internal departments, external partners, lenders, and contributors.
• Help facilitate gallery tours and contribute to audience engagement initiatives.
• Assist in organizing and executing events, lectures, and public programs.
