Process Safety Engineer

Job Summary

The Process Safety Engineer will support the Head of Safety and Loss Prevention Senior Engineer in deploying the Process Safety Management System throughout the organization. As a crucial member of the Process Safety team, the engineer will collaborate with relevant operations and technical departments to facilitate risk assessments and safety studies for both projects and ongoing operations.

Key Duties

• Ensure adherence and promotion of QAFCO’s management systems encompassing Occupational Health & Safety, Environment, Quality, Responsible Care, Product Stewardship, and Process Safety Management (PSM).
• Support development and execution of documentation and activities related to monitoring and maintaining PSM systems.
• Create and maintain Company Process Safety Specifications and Standards for utilization across projects and operational assets.
• Work with operational and technical teams to guarantee compliance with PSM requirements.
• Apply established standards, technical criteria, and sound engineering practices to ensure projects and operations meet defined process safety benchmarks.
• Lead and coordinate the company-wide network for process safety requirements and procedural updates.
• Provide process safety specifications for equipment and service procurement; evaluate bids and recommend suppliers to fulfill process safety goals.
• Manage activities within the Process Safety group and lead company initiatives promoting process safety awareness.
• Collaborate with management to formulate short and long-term process safety goals, strategies, and measurable targets that guide risk mitigation plans.
• Develop and monitor key performance indicators, particularly leading indicators, to track PSM progress regularly.
• Prepare and review periodic PSM reports on a weekly and monthly basis.
• Participate in conducting and facilitating Process Hazard Analysis studies such as HAZOP, SIL, QRA, LOPA, FMEA, MHA/DHA, safety case evaluations, and dispersion studies.
• Plan and coordinate safety-related activities with operations and project teams ensuring adherence to timelines, specifications, and budgets.
• Lead or contribute to investigations of process safety incidents, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions, along with lessons learned, are communicated to prevent recurrence.
• Develop actionable recommendations for process modifications aimed at hazard mitigation and achievement of risk reduction objectives.
• Stay updated on technological advances and best practices in process safety to enhance effectiveness and reduce costs.

Candidate Profile

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably Chemical Engineering.
• Certifications such as NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety, Process Safety Management, Incident Investigations & Root Cause Analysis, and Process Hazard Analysis are advantageous.
• A minimum of 8 years of proven experience in a similar role, particularly within Fertilizer, Petrochemical, or Oil & Gas sectors.
• Strong supervisory capabilities and familiarity with process safety codes, standards, and recommended practices.
• Excellent engineering judgment with ability to identify, evaluate, and address hazards; detail oriented, proactive, organized, and analytically skilled.
• Proficiency with standard PC software applications.
• Good command of English with strong verbal communication and technical report writing skills.
