Principal Pipeline Welding Engineer

Job Overview

The Principal Welding Engineer plays a pivotal role in addressing complex welding challenges by providing expert recommendations and best practice solutions. Operating with a high degree of independence, this role involves leading teams or projects while demonstrating deep specialization in welding alongside broad engineering knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic guidance and metallurgical welding consultation to operations teams and Project Management Teams (PMT) on both onshore and offshore projects.
• Develop and manage the Project Welding Qualification Execution Plan, detailing necessary weld procedures, qualification schedules, and consumables requirements.
• Prioritize tasks to align with project timelines and continuously monitor progress.
• Review and approve all welding procedures in coordination with customers and Certifying Authorities.
• Select appropriate welding electrodes considering their physical, chemical, corrosion resistance, weldability, and cost factors.
• Analyze project timelines, material reports, and consumable estimates, adjusting welding execution plans accordingly.
• Oversee the welding training facility to enhance workforce skills and workmanship quality.
• Support the advancement and implementation of automated welding technologies.
• Estimate and review costs for bids and manage consumables requisition and forecasting.
• Conduct readiness reviews for critical offshore operational campaigns.
• Collaborate with fabrication, marine, and welding departments and external technology groups to promote research and development in welding ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
• Maintain relationships with technical organizations and manufacturers to stay updated on industry advancements.
• Resolve metallurgical, welding, and quality-related issues through failure investigations and fit-for-purpose solutions.
• Initiate evaluations for nonconforming work ensuring suitability for purpose.
• Assess and manage the professional development, classification, and compensation of direct welding engineer reports.
• Perform technical evaluations of vendor facilities.
• Contribute welding expertise to bidding processes and oversee project execution monitoring.
• Coordinate closely with operations managers, discipline leads, project teams, customers, QC/NDT engineers, certifying authorities, and consulting bodies like TWI and DNV.

Qualifications

• Postgraduate degree such as MS, M Tech, or ME in Welding.
• Bachelor's degree like BS, BE, or B Tech in Welding, Metallurgy, or Mechanical Engineering.
• More than eight years of relevant experience in welding, metallurgy, materials, and subsea pipelines.
• Professional certifications such as Chartered Engineer or Senior Member of WeldI and membership in relevant professional bodies are desirable.
• Preferably holds welding inspection qualifications.
