About the Role
An opening is available for a seasoned Principal Java Software Engineer to join a federal government agency dedicated to maritime safety and emergency response operations in Australia. The position supports the NEXUS platform, which is essential for managing maritime and aviation search and rescue missions as well as pollution response activities nationwide. The role involves working within a skilled development team focused on supporting, maintaining, and advancing large-scale Java applications and AWS-based cloud infrastructure that deliver operational services across the country.
Primary Responsibilities
- Architect, build, and sustain robust Java applications and backend services suitable for enterprise use.
- Create and maintain cloud-based solutions and integrations utilizing AWS technologies.
- Develop RESTful and SOAP web services for internal and external communication.
- Design Oracle database solutions including data modeling and creating stored procedures.
- Develop web-based frontends leveraging ReactJS, HTML, and CSS technologies.
- Generate comprehensive technical documentation and design artifacts.
- Contribute to continuous integration and deployment pipelines using Jenkins, Git, and Maven tools.
- Execute software releases alongside ongoing testing and system improvement efforts.
- Offer expert technical guidance to senior technology stakeholders.
- Participate in shared on-call duties for critical production systems, noting historically minimal call volume.
Required Experience and Skills
- At least 8 years of experience in enterprise Java application development.
- Proficiency with Java, Spring/Spring Boot frameworks, JPA, and Hibernate ORM.
- Experience designing and implementing RESTful and SOAP APIs.
- Strong skills in Oracle Database management including SQL, PL/SQL, and data modeling.
- Familiarity with AWS services such as EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, SQS, and CloudFormation.
- Competency in frontend technologies: ReactJS, HTML, and CSS.
- Knowledge of version control and build tools, including Git, Maven, Jenkins, and CI/CD processes.
- Experience with Linux/Unix system administration and Bash scripting.
- Commitment to software engineering best practices, including automated testing and detailed documentation.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
- Willingness to join an on-call support rotation for vital production applications.
Additional Information
- Location: Canberra, ACT with hybrid working options including regular remote work.
- Contract length: 12 months with the possibility of two 12-month extensions.
- Security requirement: Must be an Australian citizen eligible for Baseline Security Clearance.
