Job description
Overview
We are seeking a skilled Packaging Technician to join Cummins Europe's Production Scheduling Department located in Huddersfield, United Kingdom. This is a permanent onsite role with some flexibility in working hours, primarily Monday to Friday from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
Primary Duties
- Ensure smooth day-to-day packaging operations at the site with minimal need for supervision, driving improvements in efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability.
- Review and uphold packing specifications to satisfy customer demands, quality standards, and operational controls for both new and ongoing projects.
- Lead initiatives to reduce packaging expenses and waste by improving material choices, optimizing specifications, and minimizing consumable use.
- Calculate and report plastic and wood material usage accurately for compliance with UK packaging tax regulations and to support environmental sustainability goals.
- Oversee inventory management of returnable packaging materials, including ordering, conducting stock counts, and reporting through the supplier portal aligned with production schedules.
- Collaborate closely with various internal stakeholders such as Plant VPI, Quality, Purchasing, Manufacturing, HSE teams, account managers, and global packaging teams to create effective packaging solutions.
- Work directly with packaging suppliers to design, test, and implement new packaging solutions that satisfy safety, quality, environmental, and cost requirements.
- Respond swiftly to urgent packaging challenges impacting safety, quality, or production, while providing informal mentorship to less experienced Packaging Technicians.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Strong technical knowledge of packaging materials, specifications, returnable packaging systems, and operational controls to develop compliant and effective packaging designs.
- Commercial acumen and analytical ability to plan packaging consumables per build plans, manage stock precisely, and administer plastic and wood usage reporting for taxation and cost monitoring.
- Experience in project leadership and stakeholder engagement, with the confidence to drive packaging cost-reduction projects and liaise with Plant VPI, Quality, account management, as well as regional and global packaging teams.
- Problem-solving skills and a proactive attitude to spot opportunities, efficiently handle customer complaints or requested changes, and deliver robust packaging solutions independently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications with capability to generate detailed reports and advanced computer skills.
- Potential need for licensing to comply with export controls or sanctions regulations.
- Extensive relevant experience or specialized expertise gained via education, training, or hands-on work in packaging or a related area.
