Job description

Overview

This role involves mechanical engineering tasks focused on new product development specifically for sheet metal components. The engineer will be responsible for taking projects from concepts through production utilizing CAD tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD while managing manufacturing processes and collaborating across departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new sheet metal products aligned with customer requirements and technical drawings.
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings required for fabrication.
  • Compile Bills of Materials (BOM), prepare fabrication drawings, and generate DXF files for production use.
  • Conduct feasibility assessments and apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles.
  • Oversee prototype development, testing phases, and validation to ensure design integrity.
  • Support the development of tooling, fixtures, and gauges necessary for fabrication.
  • Manage engineering changes through Engineering Change Requests (ECR) and Engineering Change Notices (ECN).
  • Collaborate closely with production, quality control, purchasing, and suppliers to facilitate seamless product development cycles.
  • Drive improvements in product quality, manufacturability, and cost-efficiency through design optimization.
  • Ensure all products meet customer specifications and adhere to quality standards.

Required Expertise

  • Proficiency in New Product Development processes with a focus on sheet metal design and fabrication.
  • Experience using SolidWorks and AutoCAD for product modeling and drawing creation.
  • Strong knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Competency in preparing BOM and managing prototype development.
  • Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication techniques including laser cutting, CNC turret punching, press brake bending, welding, and assembly.
  • Understanding and handling of Engineering Change Management (ECR/ECN).
  • Awareness of automotive quality tools such as APQP, PPAP, PFMEA is beneficial.
  • Skills in manufacturing process development, root cause analysis, and cross-functional team coordination.

Additional Information

This position requires excellent coordination between multiple departments and stakeholders to ensure product development success. Applicants do not need to have graduated formally but should demonstrate relevant technical abilities and experience.
