Millinery Craftsperson

Role Summary

The Millinery Craftsperson holds responsibility for creating, sourcing, shaping, modifying, trimming, and embellishing hats and headpieces in alignment with the design requirements of assigned theatrical productions. This position works closely with Designers, Assistant Designers, Cutters, and the Wigs & Makeup teams to realize design intentions while adhering to production deadlines.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Create and construct hats and headpieces utilizing techniques such as hat blocking, pattern drafting, wire shaping, and the use of materials like buckram.
• Apply hand sewing, fabric manipulations, trimming applications, finishing methods, and distressing techniques to deliver finished millinery pieces.
• Incorporate feather and other decorative embellishments appropriately for theatrical use.
• Fit, alter, and maintain headwear to ensure suitability and durability for performance conditions.
• Serve as lead craftsperson for multiple productions simultaneously, balancing individual show responsibilities with supporting other projects as needed.
• Participate in dress rehearsals and production events to implement feedback and ensure quality standards.
• Maintain accurate documentation and collaborate consistently with wardrobe management and colleagues to organize schedules and workload distribution.
• Oversee the upkeep of the millinery workroom and tools, manage supply orders, and ensure compliance with production quality standards.

Required Expertise and Knowledge

• Comprehensive understanding of costume history and theatrical millinery design.
• Proficiency in various millinery construction techniques and materials.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple production departments to achieve cohesive outcomes.
• Experience managing and prioritizing multiple project demands in a dynamic environment.
• Union membership requirement: position falls under IATSE Local 357 and reports to Costume Director.

Additional Information

• Rate of pay ranges from $27.80 to $43.57 per hour.
• Position based in Ontario, Canada.
