Job description

Role Overview

The Logistics Manager oversees and enhances all facets of logistics, freight, import/export, and customs clearance operations in Ghana to guarantee timely and compliant movement of materials and finished goods. This position is responsible for managing relationships with freight forwarders, customs agents, and transport vendors, while maintaining documentation standards and adherence to service agreements throughout the supply chain.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing the Logistics & Customs Clearance strategy aligned with Procurement and Supply Chain goals.
  • Collaborate with Customs House Agents and freight forwarders to ensure adherence to transportation and clearance schedules.
  • Prepare, manage, and secure all necessary import/export and domestic shipment documents.
  • Maintain records of shipment documents including costs, duties, taxes, and related charges.
  • Ensure compliance with Ghana Revenue Authority customs laws, national import/export regulations, and ECOWAS regional trade requirements.
  • Manage shipments through primary Ghanaian entry points such as Tema Port and Kotoka International Airport cargo facilities.
  • Oversee transport vendors, freight forwarders, and customs clearing agents ensuring valid insurance coverage.
  • Conduct vendor assessments and choose logistics service providers based on cost efficiency, quality, capacity, and dependability.
  • Handle freight quotation processes and negotiate shipping rates to optimize expenses.
  • Foster strong partnerships with logistics providers to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Supervise vendor performance relative to established SLAs and KPIs.
  • Produce regular shipment and logistics performance reports for internal stakeholders.
  • Lead performance review meetings with freight partners and key internal teams to address operational effectiveness.
  • Preempt demurrage charges, penalties, delays, and unexpected costs through prompt documentation and payment handling.
  • Authorize logistics expenses per company approval policies and governance standards.
  • Monitor compliance with local import/export regulations, customs guidelines, and internal policies.
  • Drive initiatives to shorten customs clearance times for all shipments.
  • Continuously enhance logistics processes, vendor services, and cost-saving measures.
  • Identify chances to automate processes and optimize operations within the logistics workflow.
  • Support deployment of best practices for inventory visibility and shipment tracking systems.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in logistics, customs clearance, import/export, or supply chain management.
  • In-depth understanding of Ghanaian customs regulations, Ghana Revenue Authority procedures, ECOWAS trade protocols, and shipment documentation.
  • Prior experience managing imports via Tema Port and working closely with customs agents in Ghana is highly valued.
  • Demonstrated ability in vendor management and negotiation of freight costs.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and stakeholder communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and logistics tracking/reporting tools is advantageous.
