Job Overview

The Latent Fingerprint Examiner is responsible for evaluating and analyzing latent fingerprints submitted by various criminal justice and state agencies. The role involves determining the quality and suitability of latent prints for identification purposes and conducting searches using Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS).

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess the quality of latent fingerprints to establish their value for identification and AFIS searches.
  • Apply chemical and mechanical methods to detect latent prints on various surfaces.
  • Compare partial prints against known prints to determine identity matches.
  • Examine deceased individuals' hands, fingers, and skin pieces to positively identify bodies.
  • Prepare detailed reports documenting examination results.
  • Provide expert testimony in criminal court cases, qualifying as an expert witness and supporting findings under cross-examination.
  • Prepare court exhibits using photographic techniques to preserve evidence.
  • Train public safety personnel in proper techniques for collecting and preserving latent fingerprints and physical evidence.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required; an Associate's degree in criminal justice, forensic science, or related fields preferred.
  • At least two years of experience performing duties similar to an investigative aide in law enforcement or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Georgia driver's license is mandatory.
  • Obtain GCIC/NCIC Basic Terminal Operator certification within six months of employment.
  • Must secure certification as a Latent Print Examiner through the International Association for Identification (IAI) within twelve months of eligibility and maintain it throughout employment.

Additional Information

Experience in fingerprint analysis is highly preferred. Candidates who meet the minimum standards and have relevant experience will be given priority. Ability to instruct public safety personnel is essential.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is from $42,553 to $68,510 annually. This position is classified as non-exempt under FLSA regulations.
