Position Overview
We seek a Junior Designer specializing in paper and packaging to join our retail client’s team in Toronto for a 6-month contract. This role supports the creation and development of paper products and packaging visuals from initial concepts to final output, collaborating closely with various teams to ensure quality and brand alignment.
Responsibilities
- Assist in generating graphics, artwork, typography, and packaging designs throughout all development phases.
- Research and recommend stock illustrations and patterns for purchase when necessary.
- Retouch and recolor acquired prints and images to match seasonal concepts and brand aesthetics.
- Work alongside design, merchandising, sourcing, and production teams to deliver product artwork successfully.
- Manage multiple projects and seasonal collections across different development stages simultaneously.
- Prepare detailed technical specifications and tech packs to facilitate vendor production.
- Resize, adapt, and format artworks for diverse product and packaging applications.
- Review product samples to ensure quality standards and design accuracy are met.
- Monitor development timelines, handle revisions, and communicate updates to vendors.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to troubleshoot design, production, and quality challenges.
- Research emerging design trends to contribute to innovative product lines.
- Incorporate customer preferences to advocate for the end-user during design decisions.
- Identify and suggest improvements to workflows and product results continuously.
- Engage in knowledge sharing and encourage continuous learning within the team environment.
Qualifications and Skills
- Degree or diploma in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Industrial Design, or a related discipline.
- Two to three years of experience in an agency or in-house creative setting.
- Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; experience with Procreate is advantageous.
- Good knowledge of print production and packaging design technicalities.
- Solid foundation in graphic design principles including typography, layout, and branding.
- Exceptional attention to detail with strong organizational and communication abilities.
- Capability to handle multiple priorities, adhere to deadlines, and work independently.
- Effective team collaboration skills.
- Familiarity with retail design standards and packaging design is beneficial.
Additional Information
This onsite position requires close collaboration in a team environment and may involve access to confidential client or customer information. Started July 2026, the role involves approximately 37 hours per week, working four days a week at a downtown Toronto office.
Compensation ranges from $25 to $32 per hour, reported on a T4 basis.
