Position Overview
The GIS Technician I role is an entry-level position focusing on maintaining, analyzing, and visualizing geographic information using GIS software. Under senior staff guidance, responsibilities include supporting mapping initiatives, managing data, conducting field data collection, processing as-built construction info, and providing GIS technical support across multiple departments relying on spatial information.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, update, and manage geographic data layers and spatial databases.
- Gather and verify geographic information through field surveys, GPS devices, aerial imagery, and assorted data sources.
- Support geospatial analytics to assist planning, engineering, network design, splicing, and construction teams.
- Keep precise records of GIS data and operational workflows.
- Handle requests for maps, spatial datasets, and GIS assistance promptly.
- Import, transform, and combine spatial data from diverse formats and origins.
- Adhere to defined GIS standards, policies, and recommended best practices.
- Perform additional related assignments as needed.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Fundamental understanding of GIS concepts and cartographic principles.
- Working familiarity with GPS technologies and spatial data collection techniques.
- Knowledge of coordinate reference systems, map projections, and geodatabase structures.
- Proficiency with Google Suite applications (Sheets, Docs, Gmail, Meet, Chat) and Microsoft Office tools.
- Strong attention to detail coupled with excellent organizational aptitude.
- Ability to analyze datasets and detect data inconsistencies.
- Effective communication skills, both written and oral.
- Capability to work autonomously and collaboratively within team settings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using M4 Solutions, IQGeo, QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online platforms.
- Familiarity with SQL databases, FME software, Katapult, and AutoCAD applications.
Physical Demands
- Capacity to remain seated for prolonged periods when performing computer-based tasks.
