Overview
The City of Kawartha Lakes is seeking a dedicated Facility Maintenance Operator to manage the daily upkeep and cleaning of social housing buildings and grounds. This full-time permanent role is part of the Kawartha Lakes-Haliburton Housing Corporation, which supports low-income residents including individuals with special needs through safe, sustainable, and affordable housing solutions. The position reports to the Manager, Building and Properties (Housing) within the Human Services Department, based in Lindsay, Ontario.
Primary Duties
- Perform routine maintenance and janitorial activities on housing properties including litter collection, floor cleaning, and washing of walls and appliances.
- Conduct preventive maintenance such as filter replacement, mechanical lubrication, and equipment inspections, maintaining detailed logs.
- Handle minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry, drywall, glazing, lock and light changes, painting, and floor repairs.
- Inspect and ensure compliance of fire safety systems as per Ontario Fire Code regulations.
- Maintain waste disposal and recycling areas, and manage garbage for pick-up services.
- Manage exterior grounds upkeep including lawn mowing, shrub planting, debris removal, snow clearing and salting of walkways and parking lots using both manual and powered equipment.
- Clean and repair vacant units, assist with moving heavy furniture, and manage loading/unloading tasks.
- Prepare reports, complete work orders, and notify supervisors of any hazards or building issues.
- Respond to emergency situations any time, carrying necessary communication devices.
- Flexibly work various shifts with minimal supervision and perform other related functions as necessary.
Qualifications & Skills
- Secondary school diploma with at least two years’ experience in building operations, cleaning, and grounds maintenance.
- Ability to interact thoughtfully and respectfully with diverse individuals facing challenges such as poverty, mental health issues, disabilities, and behavioural difficulties.
- Experience driving and ploughing with a ¾ ton pickup truck.
- Certified Playground Inspector designation is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices including PPE and WHMIS.
- Proficient in following instructions, teamwork, and operating hand and motorized tools, including custodial machinery and small tractors with attachments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with the public, council, and staff.
- Initiative and commitment to quality improvements, sharing suggestions with management.
- Basic computer skills, including email usage.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s licence and access to a vehicle for work-related travel.
- Successful completion of a criminal record check including vulnerable sector screening upon conditional offer.
Employment Terms
- Permanent full-time position under CUPE 855 Outside Union.
- Workweek of 40 hours with potential weekend shifts.
- Some travel within the City of Kawartha Lakes required.
- Wage range: $33.44 to $36.17 per hour (2026 rates).
