Overview

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte's Facilities Management department seeks a dedicated Energy Engineer to lead energy management efforts, analyze utility data, and promote efficiency across campus buildings. Work Schedule & Location

This is a permanent, full-time position working onsite Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, totaling 40 hours per week at the Facilities Operations & Parking Services facility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and analyze energy and water consumption, including electricity and gas, to identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Validate utility bills and detect unusual consumption patterns, recommending necessary corrective measures.
  • Develop and maintain performance reports and key performance indicators (KPIs) related to energy usage.
  • Conduct energy audits ranging from simple walkthroughs to comprehensive analyses focusing on HVAC, lighting, and control systems.
  • Assess energy savings potential and lifecycle costs to advise on system upgrades and operational enhancements.
  • Leverage building automation system (BAS) data and analytic tools to enhance building performance and identify system faults.
  • Support commissioning and re-commissioning projects ensuring optimal system functionality.
  • Assist in planning, prioritizing, and implementing energy-saving projects, evaluating their return on investment.
  • Review designs for new constructions or renovations to ensure energy-efficient standards are met.
  • Collaborate on campus-wide energy and sustainability initiatives, ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Stay updated with emerging technologies and best practices relevant to energy management.
  • Support long-term infrastructure and capital planning efforts to enhance sustainability.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • At least three years of professional experience in energy engineering, facility operations, commissioning, or building performance analysis, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of HVAC systems, control mechanisms, energy efficiency, and building operations.
  • Experience with energy data analysis, benchmarking, and reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with building automation systems, metering, and analytics platforms.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including engineers, technicians, and management.
  • Strong skills in communication, documentation, and analytical reasoning.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Commissioning Agent (CxA) or equivalent credential
