Job Overview

The Design & Technology and ICT Technician plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth and secure delivery of Design & Technology, Electronics, Product Design, and ICT curriculum across Key Stage 3, GCSE, and Post-16 levels. This position entails providing comprehensive practical, technical, and organisational assistance to both staff and students by preparing and maintaining workshops, ICT facilities, equipment, and resources to foster effective teaching and learning.

Core Responsibilities

  • Prepare Design & Technology workshops, ICT rooms, and specialized teaching venues with necessary tools, machinery, materials, consumables, and personal protective equipment for lessons.
  • Organize and manage resources for practical projects, coursework, assessments, exhibitions, and exams to support students' practical learning.
  • Maintain orderly, safe, and efficient learning environments and oversee proper labeling, storage, and management of student work and departmental materials.
  • Handle CAD/CAM related resources including 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC equipment for supporting the curriculum.
  • Assist teachers and pupils during hands-on and digital lessons, demonstrating safe usage of equipment and software and aiding with manufacturing, electronics, prototyping, coding, and digital design tasks.
  • Troubleshoot issues during lessons and provide support during coursework, projects, assessments, and exhibitions.
  • Prepare and maintain classroom computers, tablets, printers, and other technological devices, providing support for hardware/software issues, connectivity, and print functions.
  • Install, update, and test approved software and work alongside the IT department on more complex technical challenges.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, cleaning, calibration, and safety checks on machinery, ICT equipment, and tools; report faults and coordinate repairs as needed.
  • Manage inventories, asset registers, stock levels, and oversee ordering processes to ensure resource availability.
  • Champion health and safety compliance within workshops and ICT settings, enforce safe practices, assist with risk assessments, and promptly report any hazards or incidents.
  • Collaborate effectively with teachers, support staff, and external partners; maintain precise documentation; and engage in continuous professional development.
  • Contribute positively to the school’s ethos and its broader community life.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Proven experience in a Design & Technology, ICT, or similar technical support capacity.
  • Strong knowledge of workshop tools, machinery, materials, and ICT hardware and software.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM technologies, including 3D printing and laser cutting.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to maintain thorough records and manage stock efficiently.
  • Sound understanding of health and safety standards pertinent to practical learning environments.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities with the capability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and supporting student welfare.
  • Preferred: Prior experience in educational environments, specifically supporting GCSE or Post-16 courses, and knowledge of electronics, coding, robotics, or STEAM initiatives.
  • Additional assets include experience with procurement, inventory control, supplier management, and related technical certifications or training.
