Role Overview
We are seeking a Financial Controller experienced in the retail sector to join our expanding team. This role entails partnering closely with retail company leaders and employee-owners to enhance financial transparency, streamline operations, and drive sustainable strategic growth. The Controller will manage the complete accounting cycle, oversee inventory management, and provide key financial advisories while identifying opportunities to optimize processes and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a trusted financial advisor to retail corporate presidents, providing customized financial insights aligned with operational demands.
- Utilize hands-on retail and foodservice operational experience to support cost management, product margin assessment, vendor relations, and inventory forecasting.
- Interpret complex financial information to deliver actionable recommendations for short- and long-term strategic planning.
- Manage comprehensive accounting functions including accounts payable, receivable, general ledger, inventory valuation, revenue recognition, and payroll processing.
- Lead month-end and year-end closing activities such as reconciliations, accruals, fixed asset tracking, and deferred revenue accounting.
- Supervise inventory costing and control to ensure accurate valuation and minimize wastage or shrinkage.
- Maintain a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast and propose strategies to optimize working capital.
- Prepare trial balances, variance analyses, and interactive financial dashboards using platforms like OneStream.
- Partner with leadership in budgeting, quarterly financial planning, and formulating long-term business strategies.
- Deliver performance indicators reflecting retail operations such as food cost percentage, labor cost percentage, sales per square foot, and margin trends.
- Drive improvements in accounting systems, point-of-sale integrations, and reporting processes.
- Assist in establishing internal controls and documenting tailored financial procedures for restaurant and retail settings.
- Refine inventory management, addressing perishable item tracking, multi-location stock coordination, and seasonal inventory adjustments.
Candidate Profile
- A proactive and hands-on Controller with the ability to excel in dynamic, fast-moving small business environments.
- Strong communication skills, capable of simplifying complex financial concepts for diverse audiences.
- Self-driven individual comfortable with managing multiple priorities and independently executing responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related fields; CPA credential preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in Controller or senior accounting roles.
- Demonstrated background in restaurant accounting, especially with multi-location operations.
- Experience working with small to medium-sized enterprises; fractional or outsourced accounting backgrounds are advantageous.
- Technologically adept and resourceful, thriving in remote and rapidly evolving work settings.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online, various POS systems, Microsoft Excel, and familiarity with US GAAP standards.
