About the Role
The City of Farmington Hills is looking for enthusiastic and responsible Nature Camp Instructors to join our Unplugged Summer Camps team. As a Camp Aide, you will be instrumental in providing a positive and memorable camp experience for children and teens. This dynamic position includes leading daily activities, maintaining safety standards, and actively engaging in swimming and outdoor nature activities alongside campers.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure camper safety and well-being at all times during scheduled activities, meals, and free time.
- Oversee enforcement of camp rules and promote an inclusive environment.
- Support planning and execution of age-appropriate games, arts and crafts, team-building exercises, and nature-related hikes and games.
- Actively participate in outdoor activities with campers throughout the day.
- Collaborate with camp counselors and staff to coordinate schedules and activities, attending regular meetings and training sessions.
- Build positive relationships with campers, fostering camaraderie and teamwork.
- Communicate effectively with campers, parents, and staff, reporting any incidents or notable camper achievements promptly.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma is preferred but not mandatory.
- Prior experience working with children in camp or recreational programs is advantageous.
- Genuine interest in nature and outdoor environments.
- CPR and First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification before camp start.
- Positive demeanor, patience, and dedication to camper development.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility and problem-solving abilities to adapt to changing situations.
Working Conditions and Additional Information
- Position requires 35+ hours per week, Monday to Friday, from June through August 2026.
- The physical nature of the job involves standing, sitting, kneeling, walking, talking, seeing, hearing, handling objects, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Work is conducted outdoors for extended periods, regardless of weather conditions.
- Camp staff enjoy consistent schedules with summer evenings and weekends free.
- Compensation includes the potential to earn up to $800 weekly, with many positions starting at $14 or more per hour.
- Incentives include referral bonuses, commitment prizes, and a summer rewards program.
