Job description

Role Overview

We are looking to hire a skilled Book and Paper Conservator for a full-time, on-site position based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The successful candidate will evaluate the condition of books, manuscripts, archival documents, and paper artifacts, then formulate and implement suitable conservation treatment plans. This role demands initiative, prudent professional judgement, and the ability to make well-informed conservation decisions while engaging collaboratively with team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the condition of various book and paper-based materials.
  • Perform treatments including surface cleaning, paper repair and infilling, stabilization, re-housing, and binding restoration.
  • Maintain accurate and clear documentation of all conservation treatments in compliance with global standards and professional ethics.
  • Transfer knowledge and build capacity by mentoring colleagues and overseeing conservation technicians, including providing technical guidance, reviewing their work, and supporting their professional growth.
  • Offer advice regarding proper handling, storage, and display of collections to ensure preservation.
  • Participate in environmental monitoring efforts and contribute to exhibition and digitization projects.
  • Manage and maintain an efficient conservation laboratory.
  • Collaborate effectively within an international, multidisciplinary team and diverse cultural setting.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A degree in Conservation focusing on book and/or paper conservation; a Master's degree in Conservation is preferred.
  • Proven professional experience conserving books, manuscripts, archival materials, or works on paper.
  • Comprehensive and expert practical skills using appropriate materials and techniques adhering to professional conservation standards.
  • Independent capability in assessing conservation needs, prioritizing tasks, and making treatment decisions.
  • Competence in conducting condition assessments, treatment planning, and maintaining detailed conservation documentation.
  • Knowledge of preventive conservation practices, including environmental monitoring and best practices for storage, handling, and display.
  • Experience in supervising and guiding conservation technicians or staff.
  • Commitment and capability in knowledge sharing and skill transfer to enhance the conservation expertise of the institution’s staff.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills suitable for a dynamic, multicultural, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Experience working in museums, libraries, archives or closely related heritage collections is highly advantageous.
