Senior Project Manager

Position Summary

The Senior Project Manager plays a critical leadership role in overseeing the successful delivery of complex projects related to utilities, energy, and infrastructure across all stages from early contractor involvement (ECI) and pre-construction through execution phases such as engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and project closeout.

Responsible for overseeing major or strategically important projects, the Senior Project Manager is the main accountable leader for achieving project goals in safety, scheduling, quality, cost management, risk mitigation, and customer satisfaction. This position requires close collaboration with engineering, procurement, construction, project controls, and field leaders to ensure a unified approach throughout the project lifecycle and to drive favorable project results.

The role demands strong commercial insight, excellent stakeholder management capabilities, and the aptitude to lead multifaceted teams in complicated project settings.

Core Responsibilities

• Lead projects from initial planning phases through to delivery and final handover.
• Develop and deploy comprehensive project execution plans including methodologies for delivery, work packaging, resource allocation, and risk management.
• Guide pre-construction efforts such as constructability evaluations, readiness assessments, and execution planning.
• Ensure project milestones align with client expectations, contractual terms, and company objectives.
• Provide mentorship and leadership to project managers, construction supervisors, and supporting project personnel.
• Engage in project development activities covering cost estimation support, scheduling, risk analysis, and constructability reviews.
• Collaborate with clients, engineering groups, and stakeholders to optimize execution strategies and pursue value-enhancing opportunities.
• Assist with procurement strategy development, contract planning, and identifying long-lead materials.
• Lead the project planning to ensure a smooth transition from pre-construction to execution phases.
• Coordinate across engineering, procurement, and construction teams ensuring deliverables, procurements, and work sequencing remain integrated.
• Address and resolve critical interfaces and challenges in design, procurement, and execution.
• Support design optimization efforts and implement field-driven engineering solutions.
• Maintain responsibility for overall project budget management including forecasts, cash flows, and financial outcomes.
• Manage contracts, change orders, claims, and commercial negotiations effectively.
• Monitor financial performance against targets and implement corrective measures as necessary.
• Identify commercial risks and leverage opportunities to enhance project success.
• Promote a culture of safety and ensure adherence to company, client, and regulatory standards.
• Lead teams in proactively identifying and mitigating safety, environmental, and operational risks.
• Implement quality management systems including inspections, test plans, handover documentation, and project controls processes.
• Drive initiatives focused on continuous improvement and capturing lessons learned.
• Act as the main liaison for clients, Indigenous partners, regulators, consultants, and key stakeholders.
• Lead executive project reviews, progress updates, and strategic meetings.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships while managing expectations and resolving issues proactively.
• Ensure communication and cooperation among engineering, procurement, project control, and field teams.
• Oversee project scheduling, performance metrics, forecasting, and reporting.
• Ensure accuracy of project controls systems reflecting current status, risks, resources, and opportunities.
• Lead schedule recovery and mitigation efforts as needed.
• Review and approve critical project reports for stakeholders both internal and external.

Qualifications & Skills

• 10 to 15+ years of advancing experience in project management within utility, power, industrial, EPC construction, or infrastructure sectors.
• Proven track record managing projects through both early contractor involvement/pre-construction and execution phases.
• Experience handling large-scale, multidisciplinary projects involving utilities, transmission, substation, renewable energy, or infrastructure.
• Deep understanding of project delivery models, engineering-procurement-construction interfaces, contract administration, and field execution.
• Competence in leading diverse project teams, subcontractors, consultants, and managing client interactions in complex settings.
• Advanced expertise in project controls including cost management, forecasting, scheduling, and risk handling.
• Proficiency with project management tools such as Procore, SAP, Primavera P6, MS Project.
• Educational background including diploma or degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Technology, or related fields.
• Professional certifications (PMP, P.Eng., CET, Gold Seal) are beneficial.
• Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder relationship management skills.
• Flexibility to travel and support projects at active and remote construction sites as needed.
