Railroad Flagger

About the Role

National Railroad Safety Services, Inc. (NRSS) seeks a full-time Railroad Flagger based in Baker City, OR. This position plays a crucial safety role by supervising train movements and ensuring compliance with federal safety standards to protect railroad workers and work sites. The Flagger will support an array of rail operations including major railroads, regional short lines, transit systems, state transportation projects, and contractors.

Responsibilities

• Organize and oversee activities at railway job sites
• Effectively communicate with dispatchers, train crews, railroad personnel, and contractors
• Conduct safety briefings before the commencement of work
• Adhere to and enforce all applicable railroad, state, and federal safety regulations
• Ensure contractors comply with mandatory training requirements
• Identify and address any violations of safety rules promptly
• Prepare and submit daily detailed reports documenting work activity
• Maintain track safety in compliance with federal mandates

Qualifications and Requirements

• Minimum two years’ experience working with Class 1 Railroads, Regional Short Lines, Transit Systems, State DOT Rail Divisions, Railroad Suppliers, Contractors, or Consultants, preferably in Maintenance Of Way (MOW)
• Proficient with basic computer applications including Citrix, email, phone, and messaging apps
• Comfortable using Android tablets and smartphones for work purposes
• Highly organized with meticulous attention to detail
• Strong verbal and written communication capabilities
• Understanding of railroad engineering, design, construction, and safety principles
• Aptitude for developing and sustaining client relationships
• Willingness and ability to travel extensively, often for prolonged periods (50%-85%)
• Commitment to completing required federal, client, and company training programs

Work Conditions

• Position primarily requires fieldwork outdoors
• Must have proficiency in English – reading, speaking, and writing
• Long-distance travel or driving required
• Capable of standing for extended times and navigating uneven terrain
• Good near, far, color, and peripheral vision essential
• Exposure to variable weather conditions including extreme heat and cold
• Must work safely in dusty and noisy environments
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds

• Hourly pay ranging between $25 and $37, dependent on experience

Education

Travel: The role involves frequent travel averaging between 50% and 85%.
