Job Overview

The Protection Engineer will oversee the supervision, testing, commissioning, and upkeep of protection systems within substations, power plants, and transmission and distribution networks. This role is crucial to guarantee the dependable operation of protection schemes, adherence to regulatory standards, and ensuring site work is performed safely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and approve design drawings submitted by contractors.
  • Examine inspection and testing procedures, including FAT/SAT forms and method statements.
  • Validate relay setting calculations for both existing and new protection devices.
  • Check the adequacy of current and voltage transformer calculations.
  • Observe testing and commissioning of all protection equipment to confirm faithful implementation of protection and control philosophies according to client specifications.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of major protection equipment from leading OEMs such as Siemens, GE (Alstom), and ABB; support clients with key protection implementations including Cable Differential/Distance, Transformer Differential & REF, Busbar Differential (both Low and High Impedance), and Reactor Differential protections.
  • Ensure configuration of all protection and control signals into substation SCADA systems (IEC61850) and National Control Centres (IEC104).
  • Oversee the testing of Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) schemes for Transformers and Reactors.
  • Verify protection and control schematics to satisfy protection requirements.
  • Troubleshoot protection-related faults within substations and recommend corrective actions to clients.
  • Review contractor-submitted method statements to assure safe and stable protection testing of cable, transformer, reactor, and busbar systems.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Power Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • At least 6 years of professional experience in protection and control engineering, specifically in substations, transmission and distribution systems, or power plants.
  • Practical experience working with protection relays from Siemens, ABB, GE, Schneider, SEL, and similar manufacturers.
  • Knowledge of relay coordination, fault analysis, and power system protection schemes such as distance protection, differential protection, and overcurrent protection.
  • Familiarity with testing equipment like Omicron, Doble, Megger.
  • Strong understanding of IEC, IEEE, and local utility standards.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Effective communication and capable site management skills.
