Physical Therapist Assistant PRN

Role Overview

The Physical Therapist Assistant supports the Staff Physical Therapist by assisting with resident care and related activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide treatments to residents as prescribed by the Physical Therapist.
• Accurately document all treatments and resident progress promptly, ensuring compliance with facility policies and government and third-party standards.
• Ensure a safe treatment environment by adhering to infection control procedures, safety standards, and proper maintenance of equipment.
• Attend Resident Care conferences or Rehabilitation meetings when necessary, following applicable state rehabilitation laws (e.g., California Manual Article 4 1398.44).
• Assist nursing staff in training Restorative Aides.
• Maintain regular communication with supervising Physical Therapists to keep physicians, nursing staff, interdisciplinary teams, residents, and families informed about progress, goals, and discharge plans.
• Conduct training sessions for other facility staff as required.
• Educate residents, their families, and caregivers about treatment objectives, home exercise routines, safety practices, and fall prevention.
• Advise and facilitate ordering of durable medical equipment like splints, walkers, canes, elevated toilet seats, and grab bars to support residents’ mobility and independence.
• Protect confidentiality of resident and company information.
• Report equipment issues promptly to ensure proper maintenance.
• Participate in quality assurance, performance improvement projects, and help develop rehabilitation programs as assigned.
• Develop positive and effective professional relationships with residents, families, colleagues, and staff.

Qualifications and Skills

• Associate Degree from an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.
• Proficiency in computer applications such as Net Health and Point Click Care for data entry.
• Ability to read and understand technical documents, policies, and procedures.
• Strong communication skills to effectively present information and respond to inquiries from managers, coworkers, and families.
• Mathematical skills including application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
• Problem-solving skills and ability to interpret various types of instructions, whether written, oral, diagrammatic, or scheduled.
• Current license as a Physical Therapist Assistant valid in the state, with continuous education and license maintenance as required.
• CPR certification if mandated by licensure or facility policies.

Physical and Work Environment Demands

• Must frequently stand and walk, sometimes sit; occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling to provide resident care.
• Ability to lift or manipulate objects and equipment with exertion exceeding 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, or 20 pounds constantly to move residents and equipment safely.
• Effective communication skills including talking and hearing for interactions with residents, families, and healthcare team.
• Ability to respond to sensory input such as touch, sound, and sight to ensure safe and effective care.
• Ability to assist and transport residents safely following proper resident handling practices.
• Work environment noise level is typically low to moderate, with accommodations available for disabilities as per laws.
