About BioNTech SE and the Role
BioNTech SE, headquartered in Europe and a vital part of the company's global initiative in next-generation immuno-oncology therapies, focuses on pioneering new neoantigen-targeted T cell therapies as part of a varied portfolio of transformative cancer medicines. We are currently seeking a dedicated Patent Paralegal to join our expanding Global Intellectual Property team based in Mainz, Germany. This hybrid full-time position involves regular travel to Mainz and reports to the Director Intellectual Property Lead IP Operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist IP Attorneys daily to ensure timely prosecution of patents across BioNTech’s worldwide portfolio.
- Track and manage internal and statutory deadlines related to patent prosecution, maintenance, and potential conflicts.
- Monitor group communication channels for reporting emails and instructions.
- Coordinate patent-related filings and manage the creation of invention and patent records.
- Support annual portfolio reviews including data verification and updating patent management systems.
- Assist in preparing and finalizing Invention Disclosure Forms and coordinate inventor signature collection.
- Handle inventor remuneration processes, including drafting claiming letters, waivers, and managing approvals with DocuSign.
- Coordinate signature workflows involving internal and external inventors, including handling legal formalities such as assignments, declarations, powers of attorney, board-level approvals, notarizations, and legalizations.
- Review patent expiration dates and annuity payments for accuracy.
- Develop and maintain internal quality control procedures and checklists.
- Prepare patent status reports on request.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external counsel to optimize working methods.
- Manage administrative tasks such as archiving files and lab books, and facilitate coordination with service providers, accounting, and cross-functional teams.
- Support application and modification of purchase orders for IP attorneys.
- Contribute proactively to IP-related projects as assigned.
- Provide coverage and support for the paralegal team during absences.
- Manage administrative and document processes including mail handling, signature workflows, document execution, notarization/legalization, and archiving.
- Support HR with IP issues related to employee offboarding.
- Coordinate general office logistics including event support, office supplies, basic IT support, external vendor management, and maintaining organized office operations.
Qualifications and Skills
- Certified Patent Paralegal or equivalent qualification; entry-level candidates are welcome to apply.
- Fluent in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational capabilities and attention to detail.
- High accuracy in handling complex information.
- Problem-solving mindset and ability to propose effective solutions.
- Adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic work environment.
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
- Willingness and capability to learn new IP management software and processes quickly.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
- Experience with Anaqua or similar IP management software is an advantage.
