Job Summary
The Coding Specialist will focus on coding Outpatient Facility Same Day Surgeries (SDS) and Observation cases, utilizing CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM coding systems. Candidates should have between two and three years of relevant experience, inclusive of observations coding.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently perform coding duties, working remotely with minimal supervision.
- Deliver various coding-related services supporting client needs.
- Calculate Professional Fee and/or Facility Evaluation and Management (E/M) levels using a proprietary company algorithm.
- Identify critical care cases based on patient acuity and code accordingly.
- Apply accurate surgical procedure codes typical to emergency room settings to optimize additional revenue capture.
- Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes with the highest specificity attainable.
- Precisely utilize ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT®, and HCPCS coding conventions.
- Interpret official coding guidelines to ensure proper code assignments.
- Recognize the importance of thorough documentation in accurate code assignment and reimbursement impact.
- Adhere to AHIMA's Standards of Ethical Coding and the company’s Ethics and Compliance policies.
- Comply with all company internal policies and procedures.
- Participate actively in company-provided coding training and education programs.
- Maintain a current coding credential through AAPC or AHIMA as required.
- Ensure strict compliance with privacy and security regulations protecting all company confidential information, including Personal Health Information.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
- Must hold coding certification from AAPC (CPC or COC) or AHIMA (CCS or CCS-P); CCA and CPC-A credentials are not accepted.
- A minimum of two years’ hands-on experience coding Same Day Surgeries and Observation cases is required.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential.
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) and billing systems.
- Possession of a phone, dependable internet access, and current CPT and ICD-10-CM coding materials.
- Capability to sustain a productivity and accuracy rate of at least 95%.
- Ability to maintain a quality score of 95% or above.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Outlook, including basic spreadsheet functions and email/calendar management.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills presented professionally.
- Capability to analyze, make decisions, coordinate efforts, and meet deadlines.
- Additional duties as assigned by leadership.
Physical Requirements
Work involves prolonged periods of computer use (6-8 hours daily) with intermittent interruptions, requiring good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds may be necessary. The role may involve high-stress situations with multiple concurrent deadlines.
