Descripción del trabajo

About the Role

At Google, the Debug team is a multidisciplinary group consisting of mosquito biologists, data scientists, engineers, build technicians, and operations staff. Our mission is to create and implement innovative strategies to lessen the threat posed by mosquito-transmitted diseases. Working with international collaborators, we deploy Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes on a large scale to curb disease transmission.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with various internal teams to identify and solve issues related to mosquito quality.
  • Plan and execute expansive Wolbachia mosquito replacement and suppression initiatives alongside regional partners.
  • Assess and characterize the biological traits and performance of novel mosquito strains through laboratory insectary experiments and field bioassays.
  • Evaluate new rearing techniques and equipment for their effects on key production parameters.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a PhD in Entomology, Biological Sciences, or a related discipline, or have equivalent hands-on experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in insect biology is required.
  • Proven experience in planning and implementing public health programs, pest control operations, or similar logistical projects.
  • Preferred experience includes 3 years in mass breeding and quality control assessments of mosquitoes or similar insects.
  • Familiarity with mosquito intervention methods like Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), insecticide-treated nets, or pesticide applications.
  • Competency in molecular techniques such as DNA extraction and quantitative PCR (qPCR).
  • Skillful in data analysis using tools such as Google Sheets, R, or Python to assist daily operations and reporting.
  • Capability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-moving work environment, with flexibility to adjust working hours to meet project schedules.
